History

Step 1:
The Chinese perfected the breeding of the shih-tzu, which were companions to the Chinese royals for generations. The name means "lion," which aptly suggests the animal's regal bearing and fearless attitude. Since gaining wider appreciation, the shih has become one of the most popular breeds in the United States, based on American Kennel Club (AKC) registration figures.

Breed Standard

Step 1:
According to the AKC, a shih-tzu that corresponds to the breed standard will measure between 8 and 11 inches high at the shoulders and weigh between 9 and 16 pounds. The dog will have a round head with large, wide-set eyes, large ears, a square muzzle, and a black nose, lips and eye rims. The dog will have a well-proportioned, compact, sturdy body, and no discernible waistline. The dog moves easily, with a forward-reaching gait that makes its long coat move dramatically.

Coat

Step 1:
Probably the most distinctive feature of the shih-tzu is its long, flowing double coat, which can be any color or combination of colors. The breed has a topknot on its head, that is tied up out of its eyes in conformation competitions. The animal's heavy coat makes it one of the more high maintenance breeds, since it must be brushed daily and bathed and trimmed regularly to keep it clean and tidy-looking.

Temperament

Step 1:
Shih-tzus should be sweet, outgoing little dogs, and they are not timid when it comes to looking out for themselves and their people. Shih-tzus carry themselves like the royal little animals they are, holding their heads high and looking around attentively at all comers. Altogether, this is a happy breed of dog. Being small, it doesn't require much exercise and can be quite content in either a small apartment or in a larger home.

Choosing a Shih-Tzu

Step 1:
Before acquiring a dog, prepare for the challenges and be committed to keeping the animal for the long haul. You will be responsible for the animal's safety, well-being and happiness, which are not obligations to be undertaken lightly. Besides the routine expenses for vet visits, feeding, training and making your home and yard safe places for your puppy to play and relax, you can expect to have to pay for regular professional grooming for your pet. Something else to keep in mind is that shih-tzus usually live a long time---some have reached the ripe old ages of 18 and 20 years---so you should think about this dog as a companion who will bring you a lot of pleasure for a long time. The American Kennel Club and the American Shih-Tzu Club are good places to start your search for the perfect pup. Both organizations offer plenty of good advice as well as contact information for reputable shih-tzu breeders.
