The Labrador Retriever

  • Step 1:
    Labs are sporting dogs that do best in active families or as hunting companions. Labs shed seasonally and can grow to 80 pounds in size. They can be yellow, chocolate, or black, but coat color does not affect a dog's ability or personality.

Behavior

    Black lab puppies are very active until they fully mature at three years of age. This is normal for the breed but can shock an unprepared owner.

Training

    Black labs require training early in their lives; untrained and under exercised labs can be destructive and unmanageable.

Puppy Health

    Labradors are prone to skin allergies, ear infections, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. A puppy from healthy parents is less likely to experience such problems.

Lab Puppy Grooming

  • Step 1:
    Black labs need brushed weekly to keep their shedding under control. They do not need bathed often, but their nails require regular trimming. In dog-show competition, a black lab must be completely black. Any brindle or tan markings on the coat can be grounds for disqualification. are all black.

    According to Just Labradors, labs of all colors rule the sport of "Big Air" retrieving, in which dogs take a running leap off a dock to catch a toy in midair. A black lab named Little Morgan held the world record for three years.
