Know the Breeders

Step 1:
Find out everything you can about the breeders of the puppy. Ask for references of other people who have adopted puppies from them and see what kind of feedback they give. A simple Internet search can turn up some helpful information, too, because a lot of bulldog chat rooms will include explicit and blunt comments about experiences with certain breeders.

Know the Lineage

Step 1:
It is not always helpful just to look at a pedigree anymore. Arrange a visit to the breeder's home to see the parents of the puppy first hand. By seeing if the parents move well and seem to be in good health, you can tell a lot about how your puppy will grow.

Ask for Veterinary Records

Step 1:
Ask for the medical records of the parents and the puppy to see if they are all current on their vaccinations. That will also show any health issues any of them have had in the past and how they were resolved.
