Buying Heartworm Pills Online

By Justine Depalma

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Major brands include Heartgard, which is a chewable tablet given monthly. It kills the larvae and is Ivermectin-based. Heartgard Plus adds parasite control for roundworm and hookworm. TriHeart Plus is a less-expensive chewable that performs the same function. Sentinel, also a chewable, kills heartworms, hookworms, roundworms and fleas. Interceptor kills heartworm and controls or kills other worms.
  • Step 2:
Take your dog to your veterinarian for a heartworm test. Blood is taken from the leg, above the paw, to see if heartworms are present or if a chemical marker is in the blood. If your dog tests positive, talk with your veterinarian about available treatment. If your dog is negative, ask for a prescription for a heartworm prevention drug.
  • Step 3:
Search online pet pharmacy websites for heartworm medications. Well-known sites include drsfostersmith.com, 1800petmeds.com and petcarerx.com.
  • Step 4:
Fax your prescription to the pet pharmacy. The pharmacy will confirm the prescription with your veterinarian.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your dog away from mosquitos whenever possible.
  • Do not buy heartworm prevention drugs from online pharmacies that do not require a prescription. The odds are that the drug is a fake.
