Life Expectancy

  • Step 1:
Dachshunds can live 15 to 17 years. It is important to keep them from becoming overweight, as the extra weight can shorten their lifespan and contribute to back problems.

The Coat

  • Step 1:
The American Kennel Club recognizes three different coats on dachshunds: Smooth, which is a shiny, extremely short-haired coat; Wirehaired, which is wiry and dense with a smooth undercoat; and Longhaired, which has sleek and sometimes wavy hair.

The Body

  • Step 1:
Dachshunds are low-set, long-bodied hounds. They have a muscular physique and a long nose. The size of dachshunds vary. Miniature dachshunds can weigh as little as seven pounds, while large standard dachshunds can weigh as much as 30 pounds.

Back Problems

  • Step 1:
Because of their long body, dachshunds are prone to back problems. The conditions can be mild, or severe enough to require surgery. However, even with these problems, dachshunds can live long and fulfilling lives.

House Training

  • Step 1:
Dachshunds are renowned for their stubborn streak. This means you may have to commit some extra time and practice some extra patience when house training your dachshund.
