Dachshund Puppy Information

By Jenn Ostrowski

Instructions

Behavior

  • Step 1:
A dachshund puppy is fearless and playful but can become bored if unoccupied. Dachshunds still carry their natural hunting instincts and may dig, chase small animals and roll in anything smelly.

Size

  • Step 1:
Dachshunds can be miniature or standard size. A miniature dachshund puppy can grow up to 11 pounds, and a standard puppy can reach 16 to 32 pounds.

Coat

  • Step 1:
Each size has three coat varieties; smooth, wire-haired and long-haired. Smooth dachshund puppies are the most popular in the United States, but long-haired puppies tend to be more docile.

Training

  • Step 1:
Intelligent but stubborn, a dachshund puppy can be difficult to house-train and requires patience, positive motivation and consistent training.

Health

  • Step 1:
A dachshund puppy's elongated spine is prone to disc injuries. Obesity, climbing stairs, jumping off furniture and improper handling can harm a puppy's spine.

Lifespan

  • Step 1:
With proper care, a dachshund puppy can live 16 years or longer.
