Instructions

Identification

  • Step 1:
If a dog has diarrhea, its stools will be loose, softer than usual, or even have water and mucus in them.

Types

  • Step 1:
Diarrhea that appears suddenly is called acute. Diarrhea that lasts weeks is called chronic. Diarrhea that goes away and comes back again is called intermittent.

Effects

  • Step 1:
Diarrhea often causes frequent bowel movements, resulting in dehydration that can become severe if the diarrhea goes on too long.

Warning

  • Step 1:
Take the dog to the vet immediately if there is blood in the stool, the stool is black or tar-like, the dog ate something poisonous, the dog has a fever, the gums are pale, the dog is a puppy that hasn't received all its vaccinations, is in pain or is also vomiting.

Solution

  • Step 1:
If the vet determines that you can treat the dog at home, you can withhold food for up to 24 hours, just giving the dog sugar water to drink. When you re-introduce food, feed the dog a bland diet for a while, with foods like boiled chicken.
