Heartgard Vs. Tri-Heart

By Bethney Foster

Instructions

Generic

  • Step 1:
A branded product such as Heartgard has research and development costs associated with it. After a certain number of years, patents expire on branded products, and generics can be sold by other companies at a lower price.

Other Parasites

  • Step 1:
Both Heartgard and Tri-Heart contain medications that prevent and treat roundworms and hookworm infections in dogs.

Medications

  • Step 1:
Both Tri-Heart and Heartgard use the same medications. Ivermectin is used to control heartworms, and pyrantel is used to control other parasites.

Prescription

  • Step 1:
Neither Tri-Heart nor Heartgard can be sold without a veterinarian's prescription. Many veterinarians require your dog to be tested for heartworms and to have a negative status before writing a prescription.

Frequency

  • Step 1:
Both Tri-Heart and Heartgard are given monthly. In many areas of the country, it is necessary for heartworm preventative to be given year round. However, if you choose to stop heartworm prevention in the winter, both products should be given 1 month before mosquito season begins and 1 month after it ends.
