Pepto Bismol

  • Step 1:
Pepto Bismol is one of the few human drugs you can safely dispense to your dog. Pepto Bismol is available over the counter and will soothe the dog's stomach and intestinal lining. It is especially effective if your dog has diarrhea. Use the regular-strength formula. Give one-half to 1 ml of Pepto Bismol per pound of the dog's body weight. For example, if your dog weighs 50 pounds, give 25 ml to 50 ml of medication. The medication can be given every six to eight hours. Pepto Bismol shouldn't be given to pregnant dogs or dogs who are nursing puppies.

Fasting

  • Step 1:
When a dog has an upset stomach, one of the most effective methods of treatment is to withhold food for 12 to 24 hours. This gives the pet's digestive system a chance to rest and empty itself of the offending foods. Fresh, clean water should be provided to the pet at all times.

When reintroducing foods following the fast, begin by providing your pet with small bland meals. White rice and boiled chicken divided into three or four very small meals over the course of the day is a good place to start following the fast. You might also try giving your dog a tablespoon of plain yogurt a couple times a day. Probiotics in the yogurt will reintroduce friendly bacteria into your dog's digestive tract.

Drinks

  • Step 1:
There are certain herbal remedies that might help ease your dog's stomach upset. Mint and ginger root are among the most popular. These are often delivered to the dog in a tea. Small dogs would drink one mug per day, with larger dogs getting about three mugs. Allow the tea to cool before offering it to your pet. Gatorade can also be used instead of water or mixed with water. This will help to restore your dog's electrolyte balance after a bout of vomiting or diarrhea. It is especially important to ensure you dog doesn't become dehydrated during his stomach upset.
