Negative Reinforcement

  • Step 1:
There are many ways to train a dog, and negative reinforcement is a particularly good option when trying to stop a puppy from biting. Negative reinforcement presents a negative stimulus when a bad behavior is performed. Your pet will begin to associate their bad behavior with the negative stimulus, and will eventually stop that behavior.

Teaching Your Puppy Safe Playing

  • Step 1:
Some dog trainers say that is necessary for your puppy to bite you in a playful matter. If your puppy is putting his teeth on you in the very beginning, and it doesn't hurt, then you should discourage it. As soon as the tiniest bit of pain occurs from this biting, though, you must yelp out in a high-pitch scream. It may seem like an overdramatic reaction, but it will teach your puppy that he is hurting you. The scream not only teaches your puppy he has the ability to cause pain, but it is a negative stimulus that will startle him. Eventually the puppy will associate the loud scream with the bite and will stop.

Another Negative Stimulus

  • Step 1:
If you find your dog doesn't react to your scream, then another idea is to create a slightly bigger negative stimulus. Take an empty soda can and fill it with coins. Tape up the opening at the top of the can. Every time the dog bites, shake the can. This loud noise will not only startle the dog, but he won't want to hear it again. If you are consistent with this method of shaking the can each time the dog bites, he will stop trying.
