Instructions

Is it Unhealthy To Give Dogs Table Scraps?

  • Step 1:
Although it is not recommended by veterinarians, table scraps can be given if they are given in moderation and not on a regular basis. You also want to be careful of what you give your dog, as some foods can indeed be harmful or deadly to canines. Something to remember when giving table scraps is that people food is usually seasoned to suit the human palate, not a dog's.

What Table Scraps are Safe?

  • Step 1:
Lean cuts of meat and some vegetables such as green beans and rice are okay to give your dog in moderation. They should also be unseasoned. Table scraps and other treats should make up less than 10 percent of your dog's diet. If you give your dog too many table scraps, it could cause your dog to become obese, which could lead to other health problems.

What Foods Should Be Avoided?

  • Step 1:
You should avoid giving your dog any fatty meats or fat pieces from your table. Pancreatitis can be afflict a dog that has been given a diet high in fat. Garlic and onions are also dangerous because they contain thiosulphate. Thiosulphate can poison your dog. Beware of foods that contain onions and garlic, such as pizza and other take-out foods. If you are not sure, don't give it to your dog. Other dangerous foods include high-sugar foods such as candy or sweets, macadamia nuts, chocolate, raisins or grapes, coffee grounds and alcohol, to name just a few.

What Are Other Cons Besides Health Issues?

  • Step 1:
Feeding your dog directly from the table encourages begging. It may also encourage your dog to steal food from the table before you're done eating it. If you are going to give table scraps, they should be given only after everyone is done eating and the table has been cleared. They should also be given in the dog's food dish and not by hand.

What is the Bottom Line on Feeding a Dog Table Scraps?

  • Step 1:
Feeding your dog table scraps should be avoided if at all possible. In past generations, dogs were usually fed table scraps. Only in more recent years were dog owners given a variety of healthier dog foods to choose from. With the large variety of healthy food and treats designed specifically for dogs, there doesn't seem to be any reason to give your dog scraps. For the sake of your dog's health, it is best to avoid table scraps and stick to regular dog food and treats.
