Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • At least $500 Time and money to care for and train a pet Responsibility Pet supplies: leash, bed, brush

Do Your Research

  • Step 1:
Research the breed. Chihuahuas have long or short hair coats and come in different colors. They are also predisposed to certain health problems such as ear infections and collapsing tracheae.
  • Step 2:
Determine whether a Chihuahua is the right kind of dog for you and your family. Chihuahuas require a great deal of attention and always want your affection. Make sure you and your family are not allergic to Chihuahua hair.
  • Step 3:
Spend time with someone else's pet Chihuahua if possible. You will be able to get an idea of the breed's general disposition.
  • Step 4:
Investigate the health risks. Be fully aware of all medical difficulties faced by Chihuahuas as well as the expenses in repairing them. Know specifically about hypoglycemia, seizure, and moleras.
  • Step 5:
Research local breeders and seek testimonials and recommendations wherever possible.
  • Step 6:
Meet the breeder in person and be sure to meet the mother of the puppies if possible. Use your breeder as a resource on how to care for a new dog and don't forget to ask about any breed-specific needs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider rescuing a Chihuahua from a local shelter or Chihuahua rescue. Because Chihuahuas are popular pets, it can take some time to locate one, but you will save some money and will rescue a Chihuahua from a life in a shelter or even death. Contact the American Kennel Club (AKC) to find a local reputable breeder. Ask the breeder about whether they offer a spay/neuter rebate.
  • Always avoid puppy mills and stores which purchase from puppy mills. These 'breeders' mistreat dogs and the dogs produced from these puppy mills frequently have health problems or die young. Always keep costs in mind. You will want to spay or neuter your Chihuahua if he or she is to function as a family pet.
