Instructions

  • Step 1:
Call your vet and discuss whether a particular over-the-counter flea medication is okay to use on your cat. The vet may want a list of ingredients so be prepared. With the vet's approval, purchase the medication; it is sold at grocery stores as well as pet stores. Over-the-counter flea medications cost much less than prescription flea medications, but are often of poor quality.
  • Step 2:
Purchase flea medication from your vet. Almost all vets sell flea medication for cats from their office. The vet will most likely give you a three- to six-month supply so you won't have to keep coming back every month. Your vet's recommendation may be expensive, but it will be of the best quality.
  • Step 3:
Get a prescription from your vet if you think you can get the flea medication cheaper somewhere else. Places such as 1 800 Pet Meds offer discounts on cat medications, but you must have a prescription to order them.
  • Step 4:
Use your prescription to order the flea medication online, which will then be shipped directly to your house. This method will save you money without sacrificing quality, because the product will be the same one that you would have gotten at the vet's office.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once your cat gets on a flea regimen, keep him on it. This is the only way to prevent a future flea infestation.
  • Never give your cat a medication without consulting your vet first.
