How to Care for Sugar Gliders

  • Step 1:
Caring for a sugar glider requires some consideration. Before buying a sugar glider, read about these beautiful pets at various websites for more information. The sites give some details about gliders and have mailing lists for owners of sugar gliders.
  • Step 2:
Create a habitat that has enough room for the sugar glider to glide. This is a beautiful sight and since they should be caged some of the time, make a house that is big enough for them to display their talents. Buy a wooden wheel for exercise and nail care.
  • Step 3:
Place food dishes with hooks on the wire cage itself. Do not place on the bottom of the cage. Use a water bottle such as the ones used for hamsters. Keep the water fresh every day. The food should be formulated for the glider. Treats are also necessary for all sugars. Canned crickets, grasshoppers and sweet treats are enjoyed by sugars.
  • Step 4:
Socialize the sugar glider and make sure that they bond with you. They will be polite to others after they become bonded to you as their caretaker. Take the sugars for a trip to the store in a front pouch and allow them to see other people.
  • Step 5:
Clean cages are necessary for all sugar gliders. This is important so that mites and bacteria do not infect or infest the sugar. Keep all toys and the wooden wheel clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sugar gliders will glide if outside of the cage, make sure the room is safe.
  • Do not keep windows open when the gliders are out of the cage.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals to clean the sugar glider cage and toys.
