Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Step 1:
Look for toys, treats and accessories labeled for hamsters. Ask the associates which toys they recommend for hamsters. Look in the cages of the pet hamsters for sale and see what toys they have to play with. Choose a new toy for your hamster based on what seems to be popular with the hamsters at the store.
  • Step 2:
Look for edible toys. Hamster toys made of wood, alfalfa, straw and compressed wood pulp are digestible, safe toys for your hamster. Choose wooden chews, calcium chews and toys made of dried fruits and nuts.
  • Step 3:
Pick out toys that encourage exercise. Inside the cage, hamsters can play on running wheels, and when they are outside their cage during cage cleanings, they can exercise in running balls or playpens. Look for see-saws, tubes and other toys that promote climbing, running and searching. If you keep your hamster active, he will stay in shape and stay healthy.
  • Step 4:
Choose hamster toys that will fit in your hamster's cage. Measure your hamster's cage and see how much room you have for toys. Choose a variety of toys, and rotate them in your hamster's house during cage cleanings to give your pet hamster variety.
  • Step 5:
Select some toys that are washable. Hiding places and houses made of plastic are durable, and able to be sanitized and re-used. These hamster toys will last a long time and become some of your hamster's favorites. They promote climbing, nesting and foraging.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you find a toy that your hamster really enjoys, buy several to keep on hand. Then, if that toy is discontinued, your pet will still be able to enjoy his favorite toy.
  • Never give your hamster toys that have small loose parts, as they may become a choking hazard. Discard any toy that has sharp edges after the hamster has chewed on it.
