How to Clean Foam Dog Beds

After your dog has used its dog bed for awhile, it will need to be cleaned. Dogs may get their dirty paws on the bed or they may drool on it. They are also likely to shed their hair on the bed. Cleaning the bed will get rid of the dirt and freshen the bed up so that it smells good again. Each type of dog bed is different so take note of what the bed is made out of.

Step 1

Remove the outside cover to the foam bed. There should be a zipper on the side that you can use to get the foam out.

Step 2

Place the cover in the washing machine and set the water temperature to cold. Add a scoop of laundry detergent and turn the machine on.

Step 3

Fill your bathtub half way full with warm water. Add a small scoop of laundry detergent to the water. Work the soapy water in to the foam with your hands. If you use any brushes, you will damage the foam.

Step 4

Empty the soapy water from the tub and fill it back up with just water. Rinse the foam bed out. You will need to squeeze the foam several times to get the soap out. Just keep working on it with your hands until there are no more suds.

Step 5

Take the cover and the foam mattress outside and place them in the sun to dry. You don't want to dry the cover in the dryer because it could shrink the cover. Then you wouldn't be able to fit the foam back in the cover.

Step 6

Place the foam back inside of the cover and zipper it up.

Step 7

Spray the foam dog bed with Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator. This will remove any other odors and leave the bed with a nice fresh scent.

Tips

  • If the foam bed smells really bad, you can add 1/2 of a cup of vinegar to the water.

  • Use a stain remover for any stains that have set on the cover. Shout has a good stain stick.
