How to Cure Canine Stomach Ulcers

By Bethney Foster

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Veterinary prescribed food
  • Veterinary prescribed medications
  • Leash
  • Step 1:
Feed your dog the foods recommended by your veterinarian. Divide the food into four meals per day.
  • Step 2:
Administer all medications prescribed by your veterinarian. Unless your veterinarian directs otherwise, give your dog medications with food to buffer their effects on the dog's stomach.
  • Step 3:
Reduce the use of aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications. If your dog has a condition that makes these medications necessary, consult with your veterinarian about alternatives.
  • Step 4:
Reduce stress as much as possible in your dog's life. Stress will make the dog's ulcer worse. Keep the environment quiet, calm and loving.
  • Step 5:
Take your dog for frequent walks to reduce stress.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider consulting with a holistic veterinarian. Certain herbs and supplements have been effective in treating stomach ulcers in dogs. Herbs a holistic veterinarian may prescribe for a dog's stomach ulcer include licorice root, slippery elm, aloe vera, alfalfa and echinacea. These herbs may help to soothe the dog's stomach and coat it to allow the lining to rebuild itself.
  • To find a holistic veterinarian, visit the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's website at www.holisticvetlist.com/.
  • Grooming your pet often may also help your dog recover from a stomach ulcer more quickly. Grooming removes loose hair that the dog might ingest. Ingesting hair can cause further discomfort to the dog's stomach.
  • Being alone can be stressful for your dog. Dogs are social animals. If you must leave your dog alone for long periods of time, consider a doggy daycare or have a pet sitter visit a couple times a day.
  • Do not feed your dog human food. The spices and flavorings may further irritate the dog's stomach.
