Instructions

  • Step 1:
Begin crate training your dog as a puppy. The younger the dog is, the easier it is to teach them to get into the crate on their own. It is not impossible for older dogs to love its crate. However, this takes more time and control from you.
  • Step 2:
Fix up the crate. Place the puppy's favorite blanket, pillow or rug into the crate. Food and water needs to be in the crate as well. Add treats, bones and play toys. You want the pet to feel at home with things that they enjoy.
  • Step 3:
Let the dog walk into the crate by him or herself. If you force your pet, they will be unhappy with their home and will not enjoy being in the crate. Once the animal walks inside on their own give them treats and overly praise them. They will understand that they have pleased you and will want to continue to do so.
  • Step 4:
Lock the puppy inside the crate a little at a time. You will need the pet to understand that you will return to play and love on them. Begin with five-minute intervals. At first, stay near the crate. Once the puppy gets use to that, leave the room then return a short time later. Do not return if the dog is barking or whining. Wait until they have relaxed then return and praise their good behavior. Let them out of the crate and play with them.

Tips & Warnings

  • The crate needs to be snug. With a large crate, the dog will not feel comfortable as they enjoy cozy quarters. However, remember the dog will need room to move around and play.Remember to praise your dog when he is behaving or enters the crate on his own.
  • Never use the crate as punishment. The dog will fear it and will never enter on its own.Do not lock the puppy in the crate as soon as he enters. He needs to decide if he wants to stay in his home.Do not work quickly to crate train. If you push the dog to fast, he will not take to the crate.
