How to Groom a Havanese

By Amy Hunter

Overview

Grooming the Havanese presents several challenges. The breed is typically shown with a long coat that requires daily attention. Also, the breed has a tendency to develop tear stains around the eyes and is susceptible to tooth problems, so regular dental care is important as well. You may decide to have your dog cut into a puppy clip if you don't plan to show. This is a shorter cut, but will still require you to brush your pet several times a week.

Step 1

Separate the body hair in a straight line down the middle of the back, from the top of the head to the tail. This allows you to brush the hair one section at a time, which makes it easier to manage.

Step 2

Spritz a small section of the hair with water with a squirt of conditioner added. Brushing dry hair may lead to breakage.

Step 3

Start at the feet and work toward the midline, brushing small sections of hair. Start by brushing the hair up, then brushing it down before moving to the next section. Do one side of the dog, then reposition him and brush the other side.

Step 4

Dampen a cotton ball with saline eye wash and wipe around the eyes. This prevents the hair from becoming discolored from tears.

Step 5

Wipe out ears with a cotton ball dipped in ear cleaner.

Step 6

Brush teeth with a regular toothbrush or one specifically designed for dogs. Toothpaste made specifically for dogs is safe for them to swallow and has an appealing taste.
