How to House Train Your Dog in Three Days

  • Step 1:
Set up your dog's crate in an area where it's easy to observe your puppy. A key factor in quick house training is to watch your puppy at all times and pick up on signs that she has to potty. Pad the crate with her favorite bed and a few toys to keep her happy and comfortable.
  • Step 2:
Place your puppy on a regular feeding schedule. Dogs most often have to potty after meals and when waking, so knowing when you fed your puppy will set you for knowing when to let her outside.
  • Step 3:
Select an area of your yard that will be specifically designated as a potty spot. Dogs are creatures of habit and will associate potty time with that one area as long as they are consistently encouraged to go there. Be sure the area is relatively even and free of holes and debris to avoid injury to puppy.
  • Step 4:
Watch your puppy closely for signs that he has to potty. Sniffing, pacing and whining are often indicators. You must to be vigilant in your observations and proactive in order to get your dog potty trained in the shortest time possible.
  • Step 5:
Take your dog to the potty area when you know she needs to go and periodically throughout the day. Give her a command to follow, such as saying "go potty" in a cheerful tone. Use this command every time you take her out to potty, and she will quickly associate the command with the act of going potty. The choice of command does not matter much, as your puppy associates the routine of using the word with the act itself, so as long as you use the same word every time she will learn quickly.
  • Step 6:
Allow puppy a few quiet minutes to do her business without interruption or distraction. She will sniff and look around for a good spot to go and will squat down when she is ready. Just ignore her and give her time alone to go, as some dogs will resist going if they feel nervous.
  • Step 7:
Praise puppy as soon as he finishes going. Let him know that he is a good boy, and offer him a favorite treat and lots of pats or hugs once he goes. Praising him will reinforce in him that going potty is what he is supposed to do when he hears the command, and he will gladly go for his reward.
  • Step 8:
Repeat the potty routine often for best results. Dogs thrive when given a set of habits and rewards, so frequent trips to the potty area work best. Praise your puppy thoroughly and often, take him out often and you will have a housebroken pup in no time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to watch your puppy carefully and don't allow him to wander in the house unsupervised during house training. An unsupervised puppy is much more prone to have an accident than one who is watched closely.
  • Never physically punish puppy when he has an accident. Housebreaking is a learning experience and punishing him will only associate going potty with pain.
