Instructions

  • Step 1:
Click on link of the rescue organization in Wisconsin you wish to work with. Read through the information that you find about the breed. You are making a long-term commitment to a Shih Tzu and you need to know about the breed before applying to adopt (see Resources below).
  • Step 2:
On the New Beginnings website you will find several dates for Shih Tzu meet and greets at area locations. Before proceeding to adopt, spend some time with the rescue to get to know them better.
  • Step 3:
Click on the link for the adoption application. Fill this out. List your references and include your veterinarian and groomer. The application helps the rescue determine if you have the correct environment for a Shih Tzu dog.
  • Step 4:
You will be contacted by a volunteer from the rescue. You may not hear from them for quite some time, depending on the number of Shih Tzu dogs they have available and the number of applications they receive. The volunteer will ask you further questions about your application and set up a home visit.
  • Step 5:
A volunteer will visit home. Make sure that all family members and pets are present.
  • Step 6:
    Your references will be contacted.
  • Step 7:
A Shih Tzu dog will be placed in your home. You will sign the adoption agreement and surrender the adoption fee to the organization.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shih Tzu dogs do not like to be alone. If you are gone for extended periods of time you may consider adopting two Shih Tzu dogs.
  • Shih Tzu dogs require regular visits to a groomer. Set aside funds to cover a grooming once every 6 weeks.
  • Shih Tzu puppies are not toys. Please consider adopting an older dog if you have young children.
