How to Start an Anatolian Shepherd Puppy in Conformation

  • Step 1:
Study the Anatolian Shepherd Dog standard in depth. It will assist you in evaluating what a judge will consider the ideal Anatolian Shepherd.
  • Step 2:
Attend a few local conformation shows and watch the winning Anatolian Shepherds. Observing the qualities that judges look for will make your search for a puppy simpler.
  • Step 3:
Create a list of the qualities you want to find in your puppy. Traits such as an even bite, strong topline or a particular coat color will be assets in the show ring. Also list qualities that you do not want in your dog.
  • Step 4:
Contact breeders that catch your interest. They will explain the process in acquiring a puppy.
  • Step 5:
Schedule a vet appointment for your new puppy. The dog should have no health problems but requires updated vaccinations.
  • Step 6:
Many kennel clubs offer handling classes that will teach you and your new puppy how the basics of the conformation ring work.
  • Step 7:
Practice gaiting and stacking with your Anatolian Shepherd. Gaiting is the proper movement that your puppy will need to use while in the ring. It is typically a trot that best shows off your puppy. Stacking is the proper squared stance that your puppy must display.
  • Step 8:
Groom your puppy frequently to get her used to show-ring protocol. Trim her toenails and use a blowdryer on her so that she is not frightened when you attend your first show.
  • Step 9:
Fit your puppy for a proper show lead. There are a variety of show leads you can choose from, so try out a few styles to see what works best for you.
  • Step 10:
Travel with your puppy to a show or two to get him used to the show environment. Check with the show host ahead of time to be sure that your puppy is eligible to attend if not entered.
  • Step 11:
Enter your puppy in a conformation show when you feel she is ready. Utilizing the knowledge you have gained while practicing at home and in class will ensure that your Anatolian Shepherd puppy shows to her best potential every time she steps into the ring.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a puppy from proven lines. Pups from championed parents are normally of show quality themselves and will see much more success in the conformation ring.
  • Do not take your puppy to classes or shows until she is fully vaccinated. Many dogs can carry illnesses, and you do not want your puppy exposed to any diseases while in the conformation ring.
