Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Brush
  • Dietary supplements
  • Shed control shampoo
  • Bathtub
  • Old towels
  • Step 1:
Check with your vet. If your Weimaraner is shedding a great deal, it could be a sign that something is wrong with his health. Start with a veterinary visit to rule out the worst possibilities.
  • Step 2:
Brush on a regular basis. Fortunately, because of his short coat, your Weimaraner is not difficult to brush. A 5-minute all-over brushing with a good wire brush once or twice a week should remove the loose fur that would otherwise be left on your couch or pants leg.
  • Step 3:
Feed a healthy diet. Some dogs have allergies to the ingredients in commercial dog food. If your Weimaraner is shedding excessively, try a more holistic approach (see link in References.).
  • Step 4:
Give your dog a bath. Unless the weather is at or below freezing, you should be able to bathe your Weimaraner (indoors) every few months. Most pet supply stores and websites carry a "shed control" or "deshedding" dog shampoo or conditioner, which can also help minimize the amount of fur in your bed and in your bathtub drainpipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do bathe your Weimaraner in the winter, make sure she is completely dry before you take her outside.Try not to bathe your dog more than once every 2 months. If you bathe her more often, you run the risk of drying out her skin--making her shed even more.
