Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Squeaky toy
  • Puppy treats

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Toss the squeaky toy away from the dog. If the dog does not run after it, run over to where the toy landed; grab it, and play with it as if you are having a great time.
  • Step 2:
Repeat the process of tossing the toy over a few days, making sure your dog sees you going after the toy and enjoying yourself.
  • Step 3:
Encourage your puppy with a treat if it follows you over to the toy.
  • Step 4:
If you toss the squeaky toy and the puppy races past you to get it, give the puppy a treat when you both arrive at the toy. Pat the puppy's head, and give it verbal encouragement.
  • Step 5:
Walk away from the puppy once it has the squeaky toy, and clap your hands to encourage your puppy to return to you with the toy.
  • Step 6:
If your puppy returns with the toy, give it a treat and praise.
  • Step 7:
If your puppy drops the toy on its way to where you are, pick up the toy; toss it a shorter distance, and encourage the puppy to go get it. If your puppy does, give it a treat. Praise the dog by repeating its name.
  • Step 8:
Speak the command "drop" to encourage your puppy to release the squeaky toy at your feet. This may take multiple tries, but that can be part of the fun.
  • Step 9:
As your dog learns, reward the puppy with treats and verbal praise.

Tips & Warnings

  • A good place to begin fetch training is where the puppy feels safe, such as its bed or yours. Begin tossing the squeaky toy away from the bed, and the puppy will be excited to grab it and run back to the comfortable place.
