How to Train Puppy to Go Inside

By Alicia Bodine

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Schedule Treat Newspaper
  • Step 1:
Make a schedule where someone can be home with the puppy during the day for at least a week, maybe two. This is important if you want to train your puppy in the quickest amount of time.
  • Step 2:
Lay out some newspapers in the area of your house you want your puppy to go.
  • Step 3:
Get up early each morning and take your puppy to the newspaper. Wait in the area until the puppy goes to the bathroom. This may take some time, so you will need patience.
  • Step 4:
Give your puppy a treat each time the puppy goes on the papers, and make sure to shower the puppy with praises.
  • Step 5:
Take your puppy to the newspaper area each time it eats a meal or takes a long nap. This is the time that puppies normally have to go to the bathroom. Wait with the puppy until it goes. Give it a treat and some praise.
  • Step 6:
Take the puppy to the newspapers right before you turn in for the night. Make sure it goes so that it will learn to relieve itself before bed each night.
  • Step 7:
Ignore your puppy if it has an accident somewhere else in the house. You must turn your back and make sure not to give the puppy any eye contact. Puppies like to please their owner, and as soon as they see this behavior does not get them any attention, they will stop having accidents.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put your puppy's water bowl up at 7:00 p.m. so that it doesn't drink too much water and have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
  • Don't smack your puppy or yell at it. This will not teach your puppy anything. Just turn your back when your puppy has an accident and make sure you don't give it any attention, and you will get your point across.Make your bathroom schedule and stick to it. This is very important. If there is any inconsistency, the training will not work.
