History

  • Step 1:
The German Shepherd originated in Germany in the 1800's with farming and herding dogs. In 1899 the organization Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV was formed and dedicated itself to this breed and its development. The German Shepherd evolved from working farm dog to a war and police dog, serving in World War I and World War II, and continues in these roles today.

Features

  • Step 1:
The German Shepherd is a loyal companion that serves well as a watchdog and protector. This breed is easy to care for, needing a good brushing only once or twice a week. This dog can function outdoors in a cool climate, as well as indoors as a house pet.

Size

  • Step 1:
    A German Shepherd's weight is seventy-five to ninety-five pounds. A male's height is twenty-four to twenty-six inches. A female's height is twenty-two to twenty-four inches.

Considerations

  • Step 1:
Although the German Shepherd is hardy, some health considerations are Canine Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia. Finding a reputable breeder through your veterinarian, or local breed club, will help with obtaining a healthy dog or puppy.

Fun Fact

  • Step 1:
Although it physically resembles the wolf and The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom changed the name of the breed during World War I to Alsatian Wolfdog, the German Shepherd is no more closely related to the wolf than any other dog breed.

Famous Ties

  • Step 1:
The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, a television series that ran from 1954 to 1959, helped to make the German Shepherd a popular dog breed.
