Description

  • Step 1:
Beagles are usually black and tan or orange and white. The beagle is a small, strong dog in the hound group. A beagle is squarely built, with a long, domed skull. Beagles have a sleek, short coat that is usually black and tan or orange and white.

Height and Weight

  • Step 1:
The normal breed standards for beagles are in two height classes: Beagles can be under 13 inches, weighing from 22 to 30 pounds. The larger height class includes beagles from 13 to 15 inches, weighing from 25 to 35 pounds.

Normal Weight

  • Step 1:
Beagles are stocky, small dogs, but should not be allowed to get overweight. Looking at a beagle from above, you should be able so see a "waist." It is not normal for a beagle to have a round, hanging stomach. You can feel a fit dog's ribs and see just a suggestion of them from the side.

Tendency to Become Overweight

  • Step 1:
Beagles have a tendency to eat too much.Beagles are one of the breeds with a tendency to become overweight. Beagles will continue to eat if overfed, and many become notorious food beggars.

Maintaining Healthy Weight

  • Step 1:
Beagles are energetic hunting dogs with lots of stamina. They require much exercise. If a dog is overweight, increase exercise, cut back food portions and limit treats. Consult a veterinarian for weight loss advice.

Famous Beagle

  • Step 1:
Uno, a 15-inch beagle, was the first beagle ever to win Best in Show at the 2008 Westminster Kennel Club dog show.
