How to Adopt a Puppy from a Foundation

Step 1:
Determine which type of dog best fits your lifestyle. Specific breeds aren't necessarily important when determining which type of dog to look for at a shelter because many homeless dogs are mutts but other considerations need to be made. Whether a small or large dog best suits you, age, energy level and a dog's level of independence all need to be considered before heading to a shelter.
Step 2:
Once you've decided what you're looking for, head to the shelter for a visit. Many centers encourage visitors to interact with the dogs. Introduce yourself to the dogs you think you're interested in based on the previously criteria determined. Walk, play and spend time getting to know each of them.
Step 3:
Visit with the shelters staff about the dogs you're interested in asking questions about the dogs personality and health. Ask to see any medical records the dog may have. Stop by the shelter as many times as possible before deciding which dog to adopt. Dogs may act differently during intial interactions because of anxiety or stress. The more time spent with the animal, the better you'll be able to gage the dog's true personality.
Step 4:
Let the shelter know which dog you'd like to adopt. Shelters often have people fill out the paper work but not allow the animal to be picked up for 24 hours to avoid compulsive adoption resulting in the animal later returning to the shelter. Before picking up your new friend take time to think about how your life will change and whether you simply have puppy fever or truly want to be a dog owner.
Step 5:
Pick your new dog up from the shelter.
