How to Become a Dog Walker

Step 1:
Research the business license requirements in your city. Call your local city hall and ask if dog walking businesses need a license. Inquire about city guidelines for dog walkers such as the number of dogs allowed on a leash at one time. Some cities have certain regulations.
Step 2:
Buy supplies. You will need a pooper scooper, dog toys, dog treats and multi-lead leashes. Business cards and flyers for advertising will also be helpful.
Step 3:
Set a price list. Prices will vary by location. If in doubt about what to charge, call local dog walkers and ask what their fees are. Decide how long the walks will be and if any other services will be included such as basic dog training.
Step 4:
Put together a list of references. You will be going into peoples homes. They need to know you are responsible and trustworthy. Use references that know your work ethic and ability to work well with animals. Former employers, bosses and teachers are good choices.
Step 5:
Join Pro Dog Walkers Association. Visit their website for information on membership. They are an international association for professional dog walkers. They can provide information on getting started such as if you should become bonded and get liability insurance.
Step 6:
Advertise your service. Print up flyers to post in office building, apartments and shopping centers. Call pet supply stores and veterinarian offices in the area. Ask if you can leave flyers for customers.
Step 7:
Talk with dog owners before you start walking. Ask if their dog has had a rabies vaccine. Discuss duration of the walk and if you will be going to off leash parks. Inquire about any special dietary restrictions.

Tips & Warnings

Treat each dog respectfully. Decide a head of time where you will walk and have a rainy day plan in case of bad weather.
Take an animal first aid class so you will be prepared in case of an emergency. This will also instill confidence in the people who hire you.
