How to Become an Aviculturist

By eHow Hobbies, Games & Toys Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Understand that aviculturists raise birds in order to maintain a species of birds, to raise companion birds or to sell birds for a profit. The majority of aviculturists seek to educate the public about bird history, care and habitat in order to promote the longevity of the species.
  • Step 2:
Realize that an aviculturist must be educated in many areas concerning birds. The anatomy and behavior patterns of birds are vital for an aviculturist when bird breeding is a goal. If an aviculturist plans to house different species of birds, it's important for him to know that the temperaments of the different birds harmonize.
  • Step 3:
Take classes at the university level on bird anatomy and breeding to gain extensive knowledge in this area. Network with other future aviculturists and share research responsibilities.
  • Step 4:
Gain certification as an aviculturist. Not associated with the government, the certification process is conducted under the supervision of avian professionals that include experienced aviculturists and veterinarians who specialize in the health of birds. The process includes inspection of the housing you arrange for the birds and the methods used to care for and maintain the birds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Different aviculture societies have varying standards that must be met in order to qualify for membership or to be considered a professional aviculturist. Check with each society for rules, regulations and standards in order to comply.
  • Housing, breeding and caring for birds requires space, time and finances. Ensure you are physically and financially prepared to properly care for any birds you plan to purchase.
