Instructions

  • Step 1:
Get the dog's attention by making a light clicking noise, by quietly clapping hands together or by talking to it quietly. Avoid startling the animal.
  • Step 2:
Slowly and calmly approach the dog. Continue to talk or make soft noises to keep him engaged, and he is less likely to run off.
  • Step 3:
Stop once you are about 10 to 15 feet from the dog.
  • Step 4:
Wait for the dog to approach you. If it seems calm, pat your leg or make more enthusiastic noises, asking the dog to come. Stay in one spot while doing so. If the dog isn't responsive, try persuading it with food or a treat.
  • Step 5:
Continue to move toward the dog if he fails to come to you. Take very slow steps as you approach him.
  • Step 6:
Calmly and slowly back away if the dog seems uncomfortable or threatened, hisses, growls or shows its teeth. Maintain composure and do not run, even if startled.
  • Step 7:
Hold out your hand when close enough to the dog and allow him to pick up your scent. This helps the dog get acquainted with you. Allow the dog to sniff you as long as it wants.
  • Step 8:
Attempt to pet the dog. Talk with the dog with a calm and friendly tone.

Tips & Warnings
