How to Break a Puppy From Accidents When Greeted

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Bring your puppy to her veterinarian to make sure she does not have any medical condition that would cause the urination. If your puppy's checkup is okay, then continue with the below steps.
  • Step 2:
Disregard your puppy for 5 to 10 minutes after you come home. Do not look at your puppy during this time, and if he has an accident, ignore it.
  • Step 3:
Observe your puppy to see if she has calmed down. If she is still overexcited, continue to pay no attention to her for a couple more minutes. When she is quiet and relaxed, greet her by getting down to her level and approaching her slowly from the side, not head on.
  • Step 4:
Reward your puppy's good behavior by speaking softly and evenly and petting him under his chin. Continue to use these steps upon greeting and stay patient and positive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never yell or punish when your puppy has had an accident. He may not even know he has urinated, and it could confuse him.
