Breeding Healthy Chihuahua Puppies

  • Step 1:
Before you being Chihuahua breeding it is important that you pick a Chihuahua that has gone through selective breeding. By considering a dogs traits you can be sure that you will pick the ideal pair of Chihuahua's to gain the most desired offspring. It is important that you take into consideration all the strengths and weaknesses of your potential parents. Always remember that a poor inheritance can lead to unhealthy puppies with a variety of diseases.
  • Step 2:
Next you will need to have some money set aside for the necessary health exams as well as any other unexpected medical costs. The necessary costs include the stud fees and the cost of whelping the puppies. The most expensive unexpected cost could be the need for a C-section since smaller breeds are prone to difficult births. After birth it is also important that you take both the mother and her new puppies to the veterinarian for a complete check up to make sure everyone is healthy.
  • Step 3:
After your mother dog has given birth to the new puppies then your real work begins. You will need to have lots of food on hand for the puppies and be prepared to get them their vaccinations on time. For the first few weeks you will need to devote a lot of time to both the mother and her puppies. Make sure you weigh the puppies each day and keep tract of their weight. If you notice a puppy isn't feeding then you will need to bottle feed them every two hours.
  • Step 4:
Finally as your puppies start to mature you will need to do additional work. This include training and discipline the puppies so they will be ready for their new home. Two important things to remember during this time is potty training and socializing. A Chihuahua that is properly socialized can be a lot friendlier and less likely to bark a lot. However, Chihuahua's are also extremely jealous so you will need to pay equal attention to all the puppies and properly discipline them so that they can make a good house pet for their new owners.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you carefully consider whether or not breeding is right for you before starting.
  • If anything doesn't seem right before, during or after the birthing process always take your dog to a licensed veterinarian for professional care.
