Understand the breed. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are energetic dogs, as are most Spaniels. You’ll need to have the time to give them a good walk for exercise each day. Their coats are easiest to maintain if they get a daily brushing.

Be aware that while the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a breed is known to be good with children, supervision is always best. Because of the small size of the dog, children under 5 will need to be closely watched so that they don’t hurt a puppy with their exuberance.

Look for a reputable breeder. Find someone committed to bringing out the best in the breed. Good places to get recommendations are your local vet, groomer, or pet supply store.
Step 4:
Consider a rescue organization specific to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. This is more often less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder. There are many advantages to buying a dog that’s out of the puppy stage, too. He’s probably already housebroken, past the chewing stage, and will be more patient and gentle with children.
