Instructions

  • Step 1:
Research the Persian cat breed to get an idea of its personality and care requirements. Persian cats have specific temperaments, grooming needs and health conditions that should be considered before purchasing. Make sure that you are capable of satisfying all Persian cat care requirements before you commit to buying and caring for one.
  • Step 2:
Choose features that you'd like your Persian cat to have. Persian cats come in an array of colors including tabby, tortoiseshell, tabby and blue. Persian cats' faces can also be a "doll" or traditional "flat" shape.
  • Step 3:
Write the Cat Fanciers' Association for lists of breeders' clubs near you.
  • Step 4:
Contact breeders' clubs and network with Persian cat breeders.
  • Step 5:
Indicate that you are interested in purchasing a pet Persian cat. It's essential to tell the breeder that you desire a pet cat; otherwise, the breeder may believe that you are interested in a show cat.
  • Step 6:
Find breeders that have your type of preferred Persian cat. Arrange meetings to see stock at their catteries. Visit the breeders.
  • Step 7:
Apply your research to check kittens for any obvious physical health problems.
  • Step 8:
Decide on a breeder from whom to purchase a kitten.
  • Step 9:
Inquire about Persian cat care. Many new Persian cat owners have questions about their cat's coat and face maintenance. Get tips from your chosen breeder on how you should brush and wash your cat's coat. Have the breeder demonstrate how you should wipe the Persian cat's face and clean eye drippings.
  • Step 10:
Finalize the sale by exchanging money. Obtain a pedigree card, vaccination book, proof of registration, a care book and a receipt from the breeder. The pedigree card and receipt should include the seller and buyer's signatures.
  • Step 11:
Ask for the breeder's phone number so that you may contact her should you need any help with pet Persian cat care in the future.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy Persian cats only from certified breeders.
  • Avoid buying "bargain bin" cats. Breeders who sell Persian cats at lower than standard prices typically sell cats that are not up to the breed's standard.
