How to Buy a Purebred Puppy

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Look at the different breeds. You can narrow down your choices based on size of the dog, coat, temperament and activity level. You need to compare your lifestyle with the dog's requirements. Use the Eukanuba Breed Selector to find a breed for you.
  • Step 2:
Find a breeder of the type of puppy that you are interested in. Unfortunately, you need to avoid pet stores since many of their dogs come from puppy mills. You can get recommendations for a breeder from a local vet, dog trainer, or the American Kennel Club website.
  • Step 3:
Examine the purebred puppy that you wish to purchase. Play with the dog and see how it reacts. Look at her eyes, ears, nose and gums to check for signs of illness.
  • Step 4:
Ask the breeder to give you all of the proper documentation for your purebred puppy. You need a copy of the puppy's pedigree, registration papers and medical history. He should also let you know of any common health problems for the breed.
