How to Calm an Excited Puppy

Calming a Puppy

Step 1:
Approach the puppy from the front.
Step 2:
Coral the puppy with your body if not on a leash. If the dog is wearing a collar, take a firm hold of it.
Step 3:
Speak to the puppy in calm tones as you put it in front of your body.
Step 4:
Kneel down behind the puppy, place the dog's body between your legs.
Step 5:
Force the dog into a sitting position between your legs, remain kneeling behind the dog.
Step 6:
Holding on to the dog's collar, rub it's chest while using soothing and calm tones.
Step 7:
Keep the dog between your legs in a kneeling position behind it until the dog calms down completely. The puppy's breathing should slow slightly and it may lay down.

Tips & Warnings

Calming a puppy is important for the puppy's safety. Puppies get so excited sometimes that they lose track of where they are in the home or yard. Outside an excited puppy may run into the street without even noticing they are out of the yard. For this reason, puppies should always where a collar when outside. For even more security, leash a puppy that is known to get overly excited when outside.
