How to Care For a Neutered Pet

  • Step 1:
Monitor food and water intake. Because of the medicine they were given at the veterinary hospital, they may be nauseated and food and water might lead to vomiting. After a several hours you can slowly reintroduce them to food.
  • Step 2:
Avoid lifting your dog unless absolutely necessary. Lifting your canine wrong could cause a tear, rip, or major discomfort to the wound area. If there is a problem with the suture area from lifting you will need to return to your veterinarian and this will make the healing process longer.
  • Step 3:
Keep other animals and children away from your pet when he returns home. You want to keep the excitement level down and prevent the children from playing with the pet for awhile. This includes all activity such as running and playing with their toys.
  • Step 4:
Ensure if your pet received a cone that this stays on. A cone is a plastic shield that goes around the pet's head to prevent him from licking. Licking can cause infection and the pet could possibly rip his stiches.
  • Step 5:
Give the pet pain medicine when instructed to do. This medicine will help the pet feel more comfortable and not so tense. Make sure that the wound area stays clean. When the pet needs to go to the bathroom, go out with and take a lease. Dirt and weeds can cause infection if it gets in the wound site.

Tips & Warnings

  • If needed, separate your neutered pet from other animals.
  • Check wound periodically for signs of infection.
