Instructions

  • Step 1:
Check the laws for your city and state. Some animals are strictly forbidden in certain places. The last thing you want is to be saddled with a fine and other legal troubles. And on top of that, you would have to surrender your pet. Be informed before you buy.
  • Step 2:
Consider your pet's needs. You need to determine what kind of space he will require, what food will cost and his social needs. Some animals need other animals nearby, while others prefer to be left alone.
  • Step 3:
Look at your lifestyle. While friends and family might be happy to come feed your dog while you are on vacation, they might be more hesitant to feed your skunk. If you travel often, an exotic pet may not be for you.
  • Step 4:
Find a vet in your area that will treat the kind of animal you are considering. It can sometimes be difficult to find a veterinarian that treats these unusual animals.
  • Step 5:
Research the animal and find out his temperament. It will be important to find out whether the new pet will be safe to have around your children and your other pets.
