Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cat repellent
  • Cat treat
  • Litter box
  • Rolled-up newspaper
  • Spray bottle
  • Step 1:
Before you even consider punishing your cat, you should have your vet rule out any underlying medical condition that could be causing this irritating behavior. This includes things such as liver or kidney problems, inflammation of the intestinal tract and any nervous system disorder. Cats will often urinate or defecate in areas that they are not supposed to because they are trying to tell their owner that they are feeling unwell.
  • Step 2:
If you find your cat peeing outside the box, do not scold him while taking him to the box. It is best to quietly pick him up and place him in the litter box.
  • Step 3:
Cats are extremely clean by nature. Make sure their litter box is a place that is very clean. It is understandable that a cat will refuse to urinate in a dirty litter box.
  • Step 4:
You may have to experiment with cat litter until you find one that your pet prefers.
  • Step 5:
Reward your cat each time that he uses his litter box to pee. Praise him and give him a treat.
  • Step 6:
If discipline is truly called for, then take a water bottle and spray your cat if you catch him in the act of the unwanted behavior such as peeing on the carpet.
  • Step 7:
Use a stern voice to communicate to your cat that you don’t appreciate him peeing on the carpet. Say "No!" in this tone of voice during the act. If you wait until later, he will not understand why he is being punished. He will only be confused and wonder why they are being disciplined.
  • Step 8:
Some owners have had success using a water pistol. It does not injure the cat and he will dislike it greatly, since they do not like water. Never aim at his face or eyes.
  • Step 9:
Try clapping your hand, stomping your foot on the floor or rolling up a newspaper and smacking that on the floor. Only do this while he is in the process of peeing on the carpet.
  • Step 10:
There are also products that contain chemicals that repel cats. Spray this on places that you want your cat to stay away from.
  • Step 11:
Be consistent when punishing your pet. Make sure you follow the same process each time he misbehaves. Cats are intelligent creatures and will eventually make the link between what does and does not please their owner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cats that feel as if they are being mistreated will urinate on anything they can find.
  • The location of the litter box must be to the cat’s liking. Much like humans, cats prefer their privacy.
  • There are cats that like to urinate in one litter box and defecate in another.
  • Never hit a cat.
  • Neutering or spaying your cat will reduce incidence of misbehaving.
  • Cats that are less than a year old will spray their territory to mark it for potential partners.
