Instructions

  • Step 1:
Learn the breed standard for cane corsos. This will include information about physical size and characteristics as well as temperament. Then examine older dogs and puppies bred by the breeder you are considering and make sure they meet those standards.
  • Step 2:
Ask a lot of questions. You need to find out what the breeder knows about cane corsos. Find out how long he has been raising dogs, what he can tell you about the history and characteristics of the breed and the strengths and weakness of cane corsos and of his individual puppies.
  • Step 3:
Visit with the breeder more than once. Spend time talking to and listening to the breeder and playing with the dogs. Her love for the breed and for her dogs should be obvious.
  • Step 4:
Make a surprise visit. This will allow you to examine the kennel conditions on an ordinary day. A good breeder will always keep the dogs' kennels clean, have plenty of fresh water available and give these big dogs room to run.
  • Step 5:
Expect to answer lots of questions yourself. A good breeder will be very curious about the people who are buying his puppies. If you don't meet his standards, he may refuse to sell you a dog.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid any breeder who wants to sell you a "breeding contract." Under these contracts, you will be entitled to breed the dog as long as you give the original breeder one of the puppies from every litter.
