Instructions

  • Step 1:
Ask your vet for recommendations. Check to see if they know of any good puppy training programs in the area. You can also call local pet stores and animal shelters and ask for information on puppy classes.
  • Step 2:
Visit the puppy training facility. Many puppy trainers work on-site at places like a pet store. You can also look for a puppy trainer that can work with your dog at home.
  • Step 3:
Look for an accredited instructor. You want a puppy trainer that has a strong background in training techniques. Ask about their education and what type of techniques they employ to train the dogs.
  • Step 4:
Choose a course that is 6 to 8 weeks long. Puppy training takes time and you want a program that gives your pet enough time to master the basics.
  • Step 5:
Enroll the puppy in a class that covers all the basics. It should teach her manners, obedience calls, socialization techniques and ways you can handle any behavioral problems that may arise.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your puppy does not respond well in a group class, consider a private puppy training program. This will ensure that she receives more individualized attention.
  • Avoid a puppy training program that uses negative or harsh training methods. Intimidation is not an effective way to train a puppy.
