How to Find a Weimaraner Breeder

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Local newspaper
  • Step 1:
    Search the Internet for Weimaraner breeders in your area. You will most likely find individual pages for breeders, as well as lists of breeders. Make a list of names and phone numbers of those nearby.
  • Step 2:
    Find Weimaraner clubs in your area. Attend meetings or call club officials to ask for breeder recommendations in your area (see Resources below).
  • Step 3:
    Look through your local newspaper to find classified advertisements for breeders with new puppies.
  • Step 4:
    Visit dog parks or local dog-centric events and look for owners of Weimaraners. Ask the owners where they got their puppy and if they can recommend a good breeder.
  • Step 5:
    Ask your veterinarian for breeder recommendations. Vets often keep lists of breeders that they know produce healthy puppies. If they have no recommendations, they might be able to give your phone number to clients with Weimaraners that you can talk to.
  • Step 6:
    Make a list of all possible Weimaraner breeders you have found and call each. Ask all questions you have to get the information you need to select a breeder. Make sure you ask about dog conditions, how often the dogs breed, when the breeder will have available puppies, what kind of certifications the breeder has, price of puppies and what kind of care/shots the puppies have prior to purchase.
  • Step 7:
    Select a few of the best breeders to visit, based on your phone calls. If a breeder will not allow you to visit his facility and look at his dogs, he might be hiding something. A good breeder will be open and honest, and provide any information you ask for.
  • Step 8:
    Choose the breeder with the best conditions that make you feel most comfortable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not be alarmed if a breeder asks you questions regarding how you plan to care for the puppy. A good breeder will be concerned about your intentions.
  • A professional breeder will be able to provide answers to all your questions, provide proof of certification, and provide registration papers for your puppy. If you feel uncomfortable with a breeder, find another one.
