Instructions

  • Step 1:
Decide if you have the time and resources to care for a cat. You'll need to change the litter box, clean up after accidents, wash the bedding and food bowls, play with and brush it and pay for food, toys and veterinarian bills.
  • Step 2:
Talk to breeders or look into the typical personality traits and care requirements of different types of cats if you want to get a purebred.
  • Step 3:
Consider your family's personality and patience level when deciding whether to adopt a kitten or a mature cat. Kittens may be more energetic, vocal or in need of litter-box training and additional veterinarian visits, for example.
  • Step 4:
Head to a breeder, pet shop or animal shelter looking for a cat or kitten to buy or adopt. Humanitarian groups also have online pet adoption services to help you uncover reliable sources. Finding a cat that's compatible with your family may take some time, so observe and hold several before making your decision.
  • Step 5:
Name your pet. Get to know him for a few days before you choose a moniker to suit his personality. Choose one that also lends itself to fun nicknames.
  • Step 6:
Buy necessary equipment and little luxuries to make your new cat feel pampered. Consider a bed, food and water dishes, a litter box, scratching posts, a brush, furniture and toys. Find places for them in your home that will give you and your cat easy access.
  • Step 7:
Take her to a board-certified veterinarian for an initial check up and a consultation on which vaccinations she'll need based on habits and whether she'll go outdoors or live strictly indoors. Discuss spay and neutering services. Buying a book that provides tips on care, discipline and first aid is also helpful.
  • Step 8:
Play with your cat often, offer plenty of cuddles and love and immediately address bad behavior (like scratching the furniture, going to the bathroom outside the litter box or biting) before it turns into a habit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your new cat may be apprehensive and timid the first day home. Don't be alarmed if he hides under the bed, even refusing to come out to eat. Allow him to explore and grow accustomed to the surroundings at his own pace.
