How to Go Bird Watching in Maine

Step 1:
Begin bird watching in Maine by the great North Woods region and enjoy an historic tradition of public access to private lands thanks to the North Maine Woods Incorporated. Bird watcher will easily see such species as Boreal Chickadees, Spruce Grouse, Olive-sided Flycatchers and Gray Jays.
Step 2:
Travel to Machias Seal Island on Maine's Atlantic coast and view the large populations of puffins. You have to hire a tour guide to get you to the islands in the area, but it is well worth the money, as bird watchers can get within four feet of the islands' puffins. During the right time of year, birders can also see the migrating Arctic Terns.
Step 3:
Journey to Bangor for some of the best bird watching hotspots in Maine. In particular, the Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge presents a year round opportunity for great birding. Bird watchers will discover such birds as Eastern Phoebes, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Pine and Palm Warblers. Visit the area's riversides or walk though any one of Bangor's many shady parks and find dozens of bird species waiting.
Step 4:
Visit the 3100-acre estuary, Scarborough Marsh, which is the largest salt water marsh in the state. The area provides vital breeding, resting and feeding ground for birds. Many shorebirds can be viewed as they feed in the nourishing marsh.
