How to Groom a Belgian Tervuren

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Slicker and pin brushes
  • Steel combs
  • Natural bristle brush
  • Matt splitter
  • Scissors
  • Thinning shears
  • Step 1:
    Pre-bathe the dog using a protein conditioner and detangling solution.
  • Step 2:
    Comb the dog with a slicker brush during the pre-bath period and follow it with a comb out.
  • Step 3:
    Trim the hair in all areas under the feet with scissors.
  • Step 4:
    Remove extra hair around the anus which may collect dirt and fecal matter by using thinning shears.
  • Step 5:
    Bathe and dry your Belgian Tervuren.

Tips & Warnings

  • The skull of the Belgian Tervuren is very flat and should be parallel to the plain of the dog's muzzle.
  • These dogs prefer a cool climate, but can adjust to different environments.
  • Average life expectancy is 12 to 14 years of age.
  • During the pre-bath combing, begin by using a coarse brush and then move on to a medium one.
  • Protein coat conditioners are good for Belgian Tervurens.
  • Some common health problems of the breed include epilepsy, skin allergies, eye problems, excessive shyness or aggressiveness, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.
