How to Groom a Canaan Dog

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Slicker brush
  • Pin brush
  • Steel combs
  • Scissors
  • Step 1:
Brush and comb the dog well once a week in order to properly maintain his double coat.
  • Step 2:
Remove loose hair from the dense undercoat as well as the shed hair from the outer coat.
  • Step 3:
Bathe your Canaan Dog. Dry the dog with a modern high velocity dryer after the bath. This helps remove extra water from the coat and saves time drying.
  • Step 4:
Fluff dry the dog with a pin brush or a slicker brush, depending on personal preference.
  • Step 5:
Remove even more shed hair after the dog's bath.
  • Step 6:
Scissor and trim hair under and around the feet.
  • Step 7:
Remove hair that may collect dirt and feces around the anus using thinning shears.
  • Step 8:
Finish with a final comb out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Canaan Dogs may shed year round depending upon the climate in which they're living.
  • Canaan Dogs are an incredible breed. They have one of the lowest rates of hip dysplasia of any breed.
  • This breed can tolerate an apartment, but it's best to live somewhere with at least a medium sized yard or a place where they can exercise regularly.
  • Canaan Dogs generally weigh between 35 and 55 lbs.
  • Metal rakes can help remove matted pieces of the undercoat.
  • If you plan on using a shedding blade on this animal, make sure you are properly trained in order to avoid injury to yourself or the dog.
