How to Groom a Polish Lowland Sheepdog

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Slicker brush
  • Pin brush
  • Mat rake
  • Splitter
  • Modern high velocity blow dryer
  • Step 1:
The Polish Lowland's double coat requires brushing every day or at least every other day to prevent harsh tangling and matting in the undercoat. Use a slicker brush, pin brush and natural bristle brush alternately as needed.
  • Step 2:
Remove tough knots and matting with a mat rake and/or a splitter. If you allow mats to get bad enough, you may have to cut them out of the coat.
  • Step 3:
Bathe when necessary. Always give the dog a good brushing and combing before the bath, as water causes the knots and mats to tangle even more.
  • Step 4:
Blow dry the dog after bathing with a modern high velocity dryer. Fluff dry and style while drying.
  • Step 5:
Clean out the corners of the eyes with a moist cloth. Dirt and other types of debris tend to collect around the eyes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't clip or trim show dogs.
  • Polish Lowland Sheepdogs have a life expectancy of about 12 to 15 years.
  • The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is likely a descendant of Hungarian herding dogs and was created by mixing these with smaller, long-haired mountain dogs. They were almost extinct after the disastrous effects of World War II, but enthusiastic Polish breeders revived the breed.
