Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wide-toothed comb
  • Slicker brush
  • Grooming rake or hand stripping knife
  • Shampoo
  • Clippers with number 7 blade
  • Step 1:
Brush weekly with a wide-toothed comb. The Spinone has a thick wire-haired coat that is slightly wavy. Outdoor debris, leaves, mud and snow cling to the rough coat. Brush the coat so it doesn't mat.
  • Step 2:
Pull dead hair to neaten the coat. Use a hand stripping knife or grooming rake to loosen the undercoat. The Spinone sheds so it is important to comb clear to the undercoat. Brush with a slicker brush when dry.
  • Step 3:
Bathe the dog as necessary. Use a shampoo for pets. The Spinone is a large dog, so bathe in the tub with a hose sprayer or take your dog to a commercial dog washing center. Work up a good lather and then brush when lathered. Rinse well and towel dry.
  • Step 4:
Examine your dog's ears. Check for parasites and tangles. Look inside the ear for dirt and excessive wax buildup. A foul-smelling odor invites a trip to the veterinarian.
  • Step 5:
Trim only if you want a short coat and this is not a show dog. Clip with a number 7 blade starting at the head. Leave the distinctive beard and eyebrows. Keep the feathering on the backside of the front legs. Trim excess hair between pads of feet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never leave your dog alone in the tub.
  • Don't trim the coat on show dogs. This is against Spinone breed standards.
