How to Groom a Wirehaired Fox Terrier

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Natural bristle brush
  • Clippers
  • Step 1:
Brush frequently with a natural bristle brush. Give your dog a thorough brushing at least once a week to remove shed hair. If you brush well and often, there is little need for frequent baths. Wirehaired Fox Terriers shed very little hair.
  • Step 2:
Strip the coat several times per year, at least. This is essential to the coat looking its very best. Hire someone to hand strip your Wirehaired Fox Terrier if he's a show dog. Hand stripping is a very specialized skill than many professional groomers don't possess. Make sure that you find a person who knows what they are doing.
  • Step 3:
Clip the dog's hair going with the grain. Don't go against it or even to the side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although they are small, Wirehaired Fox Terriers have many defense mechanisms. They are extremely well built for their size, have very strong jaws with sharp, well-developed teeth and are also extremely bold.
  • Wirehaired Fox Terriers have a life expectancy of at least 15 years.
  • This is a good breed for those suffering from allergies.
  • Many believe this breed is pre-disposed to epilepsy. Deafness may be a problem in predominantly white dogs. Some minor health problems include post nasal drip, lens luxation, distichiasis, cataracts, Legg-Perthes and shoulder dislocation. Wirehaireds are also susceptible to skin problems.
